Your calculation, Sunil Vaswani’s net worth ‘only’ rose by just over $200m last year. But that makes him the Gulf’s richest Indian for the fourth year running. He’s also had a good year, following the wedding of his daughter, which was serenaded by Bruno Mars and looked on by a cast of A-list stars.

All this was possible due to Vaswani being ‘Africa’s man in Dubai’. One of the biggest investors on the continent, he is a keen promoter of the opportunities for other GCC-based businesses to tap into Africa. Given such investments have made him the richest Indian in the GCC, his point is clearly proven: there is money to be made in Africa.

Today, Stallion Group is one of the best managed conglomerates in West Africa handling key products such as rice, fertilisers, fish, edible oil, sugar, building materials and others. The group also manages an exclusive brand portfolio of automobiles including Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, Porsche, Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Changan, Iveco and Ashok Leyland.

On the industrial front, Stallion Group has established operations in vehicle manufacturing, assembly, steel, mining, rice milling, plastics, packaging and other products. Its service sector covers health, education, shipping, vehicle leasing, home automation, office technologies, transportation and sustainability.

Vaswani has spearheaded this development over multiple decades, working in the most complex markets and operating multiple business lines.

The summation of his efforts has led to a presence in 18 countries and an impressive 49-year history.

His long-standing reputation with globally acclaimed suppliers and his principles have been critical to the group’s sustained growth over the years. The Stallion Group is also associated with several multi-national banks and regional financial institutions.

As part of his current initiative, Vaswani is driving Stallion Group to consolidate its presence in Sub-Saharan markets, while diversifying more heavily into the Middle East. The focus areas include agriculture, FMCG, heavy industries, infrastructure, petrochemicals, power, mining and services.

Vaswani, who lives in Dubai, says his stated vision is to lead the group into becoming a pre-eminent global corporation, leveraging on the immense potential that Africa represents.
