Iranian human rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi serves as the deputy director of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre in Iran. After becoming a member of the Association for the Defence of Prisoners’
Rights in the late 1990s, Mohammadi started her activity. Later on, she got part in the One Million Signatures Campaign, which gathered signatures in favour of amending Iran’s laws that discriminate against women. She co-founded the Defenders of Human Rights Centre in 2001 with other well-known activists, including Shirin Ebadi, the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, as a result of her dedication to human rights.
Narges Mohammadi encountered several difficulties in her career,
including jail and arrests. On allegations of “propaganda against the regime” and “assembly and collusion to commit crimes against national security,” she was given an 11-year prison sentence in 2010. However, her sentence was eventually lowered to six years as a result of lobbying efforts and worldwide pressure. After being granted bail in 2013, Mohammadi was taken into custody once more in 2015.

Narges Mohammadi remained a tenacious supporter of human rights. Because to the COVID-19 epidemic, she was placed on furlough in prison and released in 2020.
